I’ve learned to fall like the BJJ player, to protect the body through controlling the distribution of force by slapping the mat with hands open. With hands open. Hands open. Open. O Pen.

About This Quote

In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a concept known as 'Open Guard' refers to the position of the opponent's guard. The idea is that when in an Open Guard position, you have a high degree of control over your opponent and can use that to your advantage. In this quote, our young person is teaching us that it is important to protect our bodies from getting hit. In order for this to be possible, we must use the "hands open" method of punching.

This means to be ready to catch our opponent's punches and send them back at them. The idea is that no matter what your opponent throws at you, you will be able to react appropriately and protect yourself from serious injury.
